Taiwanese Souvenirs (2006-10-08)

A couple of friends just came back from Taiwan.  The omiyage (souvenir) they brought me was great.  The most appreciated item is the tea leaves.  I like all kinds of Chinese tea, so this big vacuum pack will be very much enjoyed, even though I don't know what kind of tea it is yet.

The bag of pork floss is already half gone.  This Taiwanese pork jerky type meat is just delicious.  We've been spooning it over white rice and there isn't much else you need to go with it.  Perhaps some simple stirfried veggies and you've got a satisfying meal.

The individual sweets are not tasty, only because neither of us is a big fan of Asian packaged sweets.  I have a very "selective" sweet tooth and KL is more of a western style sweets such as cakes and chocolate kind of guy.

My friend also lent me a movie she brought from Taiwan which she described as "extremely good".  It's called Running Scared and we watched it.  The movie is inundated with profanity and violence--not the genre we like-- and we can only give it an "OK" rating.  The movie does have a surprised ending which makes it a tad more enjoyable (bearable).

The black "iron eggs" are ugly to look at but very more-ish.  They have been cooked for hours in soy sauce, star anise, sugar and a bunch of other seasonings.  The cooking process renders the egg white very rubbery and the yolk flavorful.  We've been munching on them while watching Running Scared.  Scary-looking eggs and gory scenes.  Perfect.
