A3 Food Shop (2015-02-05)

This has got to be THE WORST MEAL I'VE EVER EATEN IN HONG KONG!  I was too naive to think that all chicken in Hong Kong was good and the big picture of the mouth-watering yellow-skin chicken set meals outside the restaurant was so misleading.

KL ordered the Steamed chicken with ginger and salt set and I the Steamed chicken with ginger and scallion.  The chicken arrived hot with steam on an equally hot plate with a cold edge which can only mean one thing: the entire plate was heated in a friggin' MICROWAVE OVEN with sauce poured over afterwards.

The DRY meat had ZERO chicken flavor and the skin was neither yellow nor crunchy.  In fact it was really slimy and gross.  The accompanied soup with one tiniest piece of carrot tasted like potatoes.

I didn't try KL's chicken; looking at his face, I didn't want to.  Who would?!

KL opted for lemon tea instead of soup which came in the filthiest plastic cup I've ever seen.  The whole eating experience judging from the cleanliness of the establishment to the quality of the food (zilch) to the attitude of the staff (cold) was an astonishing CAPITAL FAIL.

I later found out on openrice that it had two smiley faces and no cry face.  Both positive reviews were based on noodles, so perhaps we just ordered the wrong food in the right restaurant?  Then why did they advertise their chicken in such a huge poster?!

*Dishonorable Mention*

I didn't take pictures of two meals we ate with friends and family, coincidentally both sucked badly, what are the odds, eh?

A slightly tolerable meal out of the two was at Spring Deer (42 Mody Road, TST).  It was a highly anticipated meal but left us very disappointed.  The peking duck was absolutely bland and flavorless, the crepes were thick and doughy, the braised Chinese cabbage with Chinese ham was hard and crunchy like a hastily stirfried veggie dish, the other two dishes were meh.

The really rubbish one was the seafood dinner set for four at Hung Kee at Sai Kung.  Apart from the razor clams in black bean sauce which was barely passable, the other four dishes were horribly cooked.  All the sauces were thick like glue, none of the stirfried dishes had any smoky wok flavor.  The salt and pepper squid arrived YELLOW and had an overwhelming dairy taste.  Just how much custard powder did the chef use?!  The sweet and sour pork was a huge joke; it was mushy and the sauce was of course gummy, the worst part was that the pork tasted like it was hacked from pork that's been used to make Chinese soup!  The seven steamed abalone was way over-cooked and therefore tough with no ginger and scallion or anything to top them.  Ten minutes later, the server came back with one abalone and dumped it onto the plate to join the rest of the abalone and said,"Oh yeah, I forgot one" (What?!)

I couldn't bring myself to comment on the rest of the food.  It was just AWFUL.

I don't usually tell people not to eat at a particular restaurant, but I'm telling you here:  STAY AWAY FROM HUNG KEE.
