A Mansion For Our Cat (2005-06-02)

Our cat, Daifoo, has a fetish of boxes.  The minute there is a new box in the house, he jumps right inside and curls up immediately.  He has no concept of sizes and he will try to fit into a box that is basically just big enough for his head.  His favorite place to sleep is a shoebox which has been stretched out of shape by his much bigger body.  I don't know how he can ever get comfortable in such a small space.

We recently saw a three-stories cardboard "house" for cats in a catalog. It has a first floor, a "lounge" on the second floor and a "sun deck".  It makes me think of Daifoo right away and how he would love to sleep in such a mansion made out of BOX MATERIAL and he will no longer need to cram in a shoebox.  Since it isn't too expensive, we ordered one for him.

The cat house arrived unassembled in a very large box.  As soon as I took the pieces out, Daifoo jumped inside the large box and made himself comfortable.  It took KL ten minutes to put the house together and Daifoo was not interested in it at first.  He went inside to sniff around and came out immediately.  At the end I had to place his shoebox inside the house to lure him in it.  He only slept in it for a short time.

I left his shoebox in the house hoping that would force him to adapt to his new place.  But he ignored the whole set up altogether and slept on the couch for two days!  Daifoo would rather give up his beloved shoebox than to go inside the house!  Finally we felt too guilty not to take the shoebox out of the house so that he could regain his favorite sleeping box.

Now he occasionally goes inside his house and takes a nap there.  He even went into the second floor through the window once, but jumped out after five seconds.  I don't know what we were thinking of getting this "mansion" for Daifoo when all he wants is a little old shoebox.  I feel silly.
