Standard Burgers (2007-01-26)

There's a not-so-easy-to-spot burger joint right across Takashimaya (kanji) Department Store in Shinjuku (kanji).  Located on the top floor of a three-story building, you'll need to climb two flights of stairs bypassing a clothing store to reach the restaurant.

The interior is funky chic.  The tables near the entrance has mismatched chairs to add to the funky-ness of the decor.  There's an open terrace in the back which is also a haven for smoking customers and full of them when KL and I went there.  So naturally we picked a table inside far away from them.

The menu isn't very big.  There's your usual hamburgers and cheese burgers.  There're also chili burgers, avocado burgers and bacon egg burgers.  A couple of hotdogs and chicken burgers round out the options.  KL picked the chili burger set while I got the bacon egg one.  They both come with spicy fries and soft drinks from vintage glass bottles.

I didn't take a bite of KL's burger so I don't know how that fared.  Mine was a disappointment.  The beef patty was very hard, dry as a bone and totally flavorless which would even lose out to a McDonald's hamburger in taste.  The round disc of egg had a sprinkling of chopped bacon in it which is unusual presentation-wise but too much of a novelty to me.  I expect crispy bacon rashers in my burger when I order a bacon burger, so when the smoked pig meat came in the form of soft pork bits embedded inside a fried egg, I was disappointed.

The fries were very good though.  They had a crunchy exterior and soft interior with the right seasoning and spiciness.  I also loved the well toasted crispy bun with the fluffy center.

The restaurant moniker is enough to drop a hint to its customers of what to expect: Standard issue Burgers.
