Kamukura Ramen (2010-09-22)

The number one ramen chain in Kansai (western) region is Kamukura.  Their name in Tokyo is pretty well-known too, but we've only gave it our first visit just recently.

The branch in Shinjuku (kanji) (near East Exit of JR Station) looks nothing like the typical small and cramped ramen shop.  On the contrary, it's spacious, bright, and modern.  Lots of celebrities have eaten there including Wentworth Miller from Prison Break!

The feature of Kamukura ramen is their vegetable-based broth, so don't expect creamy and thick ivory-colored soup.  Underneath the springy noodles are also pieces of napa cabbage, truly unusual ramen accompaniment.

The menu is vast, we picked the two most popular ramen to try.  Mine had two kinds of charsui, thick and thin.  The thick slices were tender and fine, but the thin ones had some weird taste.  There was also a bit too much oil floating on the soup (I guess it's the same as white bits of pork fat in many other ramen) but other than that, I liked mine fine.  Hey, ramen is a high fat, high sodium food!

KL thought the flavor of the soup was so-so and he didn't think he would return any time soon.
