Computers For Our Bikes (2004-09-22)
Cycling is so much fun it's surprising that not more people are doing it as a recreation. The cyclists I see on the streets are "garden-variety" type who use their bikes purely as a transportation means. Housewives make up most of the cycling population pedaling around with grocery-laden bicycles. In rare occasions which I encounter a cyclist in full garb, complete
with helmet and gloves, zipping on roads and negotiating skillful turns
around corners and curves on their road bikes with dropped handlebars,
he (haven't seen a female yet) is a westerner most of the time. I
admire these cyclists, they have talent and guts. Tokyo roads
aren't all that cyclist-friendly, there are no cycle lanes on roads and
streets. If you can conquer the roads here on a bicycle, you will
do pretty well in many other countries.
After owning our bikes, KL and I frequent bike shops and I discover
a world of accessories which are fun and functional. We recently
bought two cycle computers so we can see the distance we cover in a
day's excursion and the speed we cycle. The tiny odometers make
our cycling more fun than it already is.
