Cat Lady (2006-10-10)

There is an amazingly kind-hearted old lady, Mrs Y, who lives just a few houses from our apartment.  She brings canned food to our front door every morning and late afternoon (sometimes even three times a day) to feed Mama Cat and the two kittens.  She'd hang around in the carpark and watch the cats eat until they are finished.  After that she might pat the cats a bit if they are in the mood and then take the bowl home.

Mrs Y does this everyday, rain or shine.  I can't remember how or when this routine of hers got started.  I think one day she saw the empty bowl of cat food I put out for Mama Cat and she decided to add a little dish of her own to place by my dish.  The routine snowballed and now you can always find a water bowl, courtesy of the lady, outside our front door at all times and a bowl of premium cat food twice a day and a tray of dried food left overnight for the cats to snack on.

I used to be speechless in awe when I first learned of this food-giving exercise.  Now I am, well, still speechless.  I have never met someone who's so dedicated to a bunch of stray cats.  Even to this day, she still apologizes to me for placing food outside our door and I have always told her I don't mind it a bit.  I like the cats as much as she does.

Mrs Y tells me she has taken several stray cats to get spayed and neutered and she plans to do the same to Mama Cat (after she gives birth) and the two kittens (after they have grown a bit more).  I offer to pay for half of the cost and she just won't accept.  The world is full of truly kind-hearted people,  the cats and we are fortunate to be living so close to one.
