Catching Bugs (2004-07-30)
We are well and truly into summer now. It is very hot and humid with temperatures soaring over 30C almost daily. In the height of summer, Japanese people like to go to the mountains and the great outdoors to go camping, having barbecues or fishing etc. KL and I were once invited to go camping in August. AUGUST! Like when it is just about the hottest month in a year and the forest comes alive with creepy crawlies and mosquitos feasting on people like a never ending buffet meal. So of course we politely declined. An activity children like to do in the woods is to catch bugs,
especially giant black beetles with evil-looking claws in their
heads. They will catch them with nets and keep them in special
insect cages like pets. Once in a while kids will take the
beetles out of their bug houses to pat them and play with them.
Errr, they obviously haven't tried petting a cat, poor kids.
Anything that has six legs AND claws can never be my pet. They can die a quick death by bug spray poisoning or a slow one by being tossed and tortured by my cat. Either way is just fine with me.
