Mist Ramen (2010-04-09)

Would you go to upscale Omotesando (kanji)Hills just to eat a bowl of ramen?  If you are as curious as we were, you would.

Nowadays a bowl of ramen with lots of toppings runs about 700 to 800 Yen, at Mist in Omotesando Hills, it's 1200Yen (US$13) with only a very thin slice of melt-in-your-mouth tender pork and some scallions.  Any additional toppings such as a soft-boiled egg or an extra slice of pork cost about $1.5-$2.5 each.  That's expensive.

KL and I both ordered the "I Love Ramen", an award-winning creation from a TV Championship contest.  The noodles were not the normal yellow springy kind that you find in so many other ramen shops; they were flat, white and smooth like those in Shanghai Pork Chop noodles if you've eaten that in Hong Kong.  The soup was soy sauce-based which reminded me strongly of the instant noodle soup flavor from convenience stores!  One scant slice of pork, some fried garlic and shallot and chopped scallions completed the bowl.

I don't get it.  Although the ramen was alright, it's no way worth the 1200Yen price tag; yet there's often a long line outside the restaurant.  Perhaps the fame of owner and chef Morizumi Yasuji has something to do with it.
