Halloween In Japan (2004-10-31)

Halloween in Japan means no Halloween in Japan.  Besides a few shops that sell costumes especially for this holiday, it is nonexistent.  May be some people will use Halloween as an excuse to have parties (just like they have parties for Christmas with many Japanese not knowing what they are really celebrating for), hence the sale of costumes and orange decoration.

There is no trick-or-treating by children and no one puts out freshly-carved jack-o'-lanterns in front of their houses.  So far I have only seen one very old plastic jack-o'-lantern outside someone's front door in Tokyo.  It's so dusty it looks like it's been there for ages and not particularly displayed for Halloween.

Not celebrating Halloween here could be a good thing for me.  I will likely have gobbled up all the candies before they have a chance to see the hands of kids.
