Careful Lift Cover-up (2005-02-17)
Japanese workers are meticulous about their work, you can see it from time to time in daily life. I walked around in Shinjuku (
) the other day and saw one of a pair of lifts closed for some
sort of repair or maintenance work. In most other countries,
workers would just put a sign or a roped barricade outside the lift,
but not in super safety-conscious Japan. That lift I saw had such
a perfect cover-up that I didn't realize there was a lift behind those
shiny white doors at first glance. Nobody would ever have the
chance of "accidentally" getting into a lift with work in progress for
sure. Knowing how the Japanese conduct their work, I have just one complaint. There should be a worker by the doors bowing and apologizing to every passer-by of the inconvenience they caused!
