Cakes And Bread (2004-04-12)
Japanese patisserie chefs and bread makers have outdone their
European
counterparts. Cakes and bread are superb in Tokyo. These
delicious baked goods are not the prized creation of merely a handful
of chefs, they are EVERYWHERE. Go to any department store
and you'll see cake shops on the food section selling cakes that look
like art and taste like heaven, so my husband and friends tell me since
I don't
eat most cakes myself.
You can also find very good crusty French bread and baguette in
bakeries. But I like Japanese style bread and rolls even
more. Anpan ( soft roll filled with red bean paste), hebi (
French roll embedded with bacon and shaped like linking leaves) and
sausage French rolls are some of my favorites. The bakery in
Matsuzakaya Department Store in Ueno () has very good anpan while hebi and
sausage French rolls in Le repas in Kichijoji (
) are the best. I
like to eat the latter two after warming them in the oven to crisp up
the crust with a cup of hot lemon tea. Ummm...tres delicious!
