Teddy's Bigger Burgers (2006-10-31)

Teddy's Bigger Burgers is quite famous among the locals and is rated one of the top 50 burger joints in the United States.  I don't know about all this rating stuff, but if we were to eat at a burger joint, we might as well pick one that's known than one that nobody has heard of.

The restaurant is located right across the zoo and on the ground floor of the Waikiki Grand Hotel.  It has a checkered floor, booths and stools, and a bunch of retro-ish decorations on the walls.  The guy who took our order has a huge belly and friendly.  As usual, there is also a Japanese menu on the counter together with the English translation on the wall behind it. (Japanese tourists and their language are dominant in Honolulu)

KL ordered the #1 Big Burger Combo which consisted of a burger, fries and a drink of your choice, self-served from the machine.  I had the Original Big Burger.  We took two counter seats at the back of the restaurant while our food was being prepared.  It didn't take long before our number was called and KL went to collect our lunch.

I took a bite and was instantly impressed.  The smokiness of chargrilled meat was unmistakable which is exactly the kind of flavor we don't get in Tokyo.  The meat was juicy and flavorful.  The bun was also slightly toasted but I'd have preferred a crustier edge and a thinner bun.  But with the minor imperfections, the burger was still extremely tasty.  The fries were also very good.  They were thick-cut with very crispy outside and fluffy inside and piping hot, we fought over the last one in the basket.

This was the first meal of our vacation in Honolulu and we loved it.  A good start for the future meals to come.
