Free Persimmons (2006-12-17)
My neighbor has a big persimmon tree in her "front yard", a space defined as a paved concrete ground just big enough to park a van in her case. The tree is squooshed between a wall and the concrete edge of the parking space. How in the world that big ole tree gets the proper nutrients and soil space to sustain life is beyond me. Not only does it look healthy, it bears big fruits year after year. Its thriving existence is just one of nature's miracles I guess. All these years (6) we've lived in our apartment, I've always
wondered if those persimmons were any good. Then last week the
woman brought over a bag of them to me! She told me her husband
was cutting down a bunch of persimmons earlier in the day and had
excess fruit in the house and thought we might help eat some. I
sure was happy to help!
The persimmons were not handsome to look at but boy, were they
SWEET. I can't believe how sugary they were. Home grown
fruits are usually not as good as store-bought ones from my experience
(I'd tasted homegrown oranges, mangoes, peaches, nectarines,
strawberries, melons, custard apples, guavas and apples. Although
they were good, but never as sweet as commercially grown ones), but
these were even sweeter than the ones I had at home which I bought from
a supermarket.
Lucky her to have a persimmon tree and lucky me to have her as my
neighbor.
