Snacks and In-between Meals (2006-01-28)

Chocolate cake from Maxim's cake shop and a traditinal snack from Hang Heung Bakery which specializes in Chinese wedding sweets and old-fashioned Chinese sweet snacks

Fluffy cakes from Kee Wah Bakery, a well-known bakery that sells traditional HK style sweets and cakes. From top: Chocolate sponge cake, coffee swiss roll, steamed coffee cupcake

The flaky sweets from Sogo's Hang Heung I had been eating throughout our trip were so good that I bought a box to bring back to Tokyo

The best egg tart I ever had: flaky tart shell and just slightly sweet baked custard filling. When we bought one, it was so good I had to go back and get another one. The tart was so fresh the filling was still steaming when I bit into it

Typical HK style bread: top tier right is pineapple bun, a soft and fluffy bun with a crunchy sweet crust on top

Hong Lin Restaurant which sells those yummy yummy freshly baked egg tarts and bread is located on Tung Choi Street

The "snacks" we bought at Sogo dept store's food section:pork hock and spicy roast chicken. We got so full from them that our appetite for dinner was shot. We ultimately missed out on a seafood dinner we had planned on eating

The pork hock was very tasty

Personal size Viennetta (that's an itty bitty spoon)

The diner (Yuen Kee) where we had the wonton noodles. Its specialty is stewed beef, but we never got the time to try it…:(

Typical tray of condiments and chopsticks on the tables of a diner. The single-size servings of chili oil on the window sill are not just for decoration

Wonton and fishball noodles in an old-fashioned HK "diner" in Tsim Sha Tsui. I had it for breakfast and it's soooo delicious! Only US$1.2!!

The wonton noodle shop where we had wonton noodle as snack. It's located at the bottom of the pedestrian walkway on San Fat Street, Sheung Sui Station

Wonton noodles for a late afternoon snack. It was tasty, cheap and the chili oil was fantastic

The congee shop. They are actually famous for their fishballs, but we didn't get a chance to return to sample them, what a shame. Next time I'll report on their fishballs for you

The congee is very filling and delicious, and the fried dough is so fresh and crispy yet slightly chewy in the center. KL had beef while I had fish congee. The flavorful raw meat slices are cooked in the scorching hot congee in the bowl. They tasted divine, and only US$2.3 per bowl. You'll have to pay 4-5 times as much in Tokyo and they will be no way near as good
