Three Great Homecooked Meals (2011-02-24)
Three recent great meals that deserve a place in this journal.
- Jan 18, 2011: KL's birthday dinner. From both our childhood memories, chicken was always included in any celebratory meals and that's what KL asked for. Noodles and boiled eggs are eaten on birthday to signify longevity.
- Feb 2, 2011: Chinese New Year's Eve dinner. Always a sumptuous spread even though there are just the two of us. Many Chinese would also eat glutinous rice balls as dessert to signify togetherness and unity. But we didn't grow up having this particular food tradition, so I didn't make them. Perhaps next year.
- Feb 3, 2011: Chinese New Year dinner. Every dish I made carries a name that sounds like the Chinese characters for fortune or prosperity. I do it year after year, it's very hard to break from a tradition and beliefs that's rooted deeply in your heart.
