Cuteness On TV (2011-08-16)
Japan is pretty well-known for making cute merchandise. Just walk into any store and it's not hard to see cute cartoon characters and bright-colored things on the shelves.
Cuteness is so ingrained in their culture that the concept is
injected into TV programs, news report and variety shows.
It's not unusual to see smiley faces and cute symbols in mundane
reports such as the weather forecast. Ho-hum educational programs
have fun little cartoon faces in
charts and diagrams (to keep the viewers from falling asleep?
Har!).
All this "kiddy" stuff may seem childish to someone who's not
familiar with the Japanese culture, but I think it does reflect the
naivete and ingenuousness of the Japanese people. Most
importantly, I love it!
