Ming Court (2011-11-19)

We had two dishes in mind when we went to Michelin 2-star Ming Court: their award-winning stuffed grouper and crispy chicken.

Let's talk about their (non) service which did not reflect a highend restaurant.  The waiter who led us to our room was damn near racewalking along the long corridor without once turning to check on our pace.  I had to run to keep up with him.

Although the server who took our order was friendly enough, the rest of the staff was a bit aloof.  Our plates weren't changed when full and the staff selectively poured tea in some diners' cups but not others.  Such inconsistent service does not speak well for the restaurant.

As for the food, the stuffed grouper was nice but not something I'd rush to return for any time soon.

The crispy chicken WAS however the star of the night.  It's just about THE BEST CRISPY CHICKEN I've eaten so far.  The skin was crackly thin and fragrant, the chicken meat was flavorful and texturally satisfying, and even the lotus root chips garnish were wonderfully crunchy and tasty.  Now that's a dish I would rush to return for.

The vegetable dish was also very good.  We have no idea what kind of veggie it was but it was full of flavor and paired well with the crab meat sauce.

Something happened that leaves us with a very bad impression of Ming Court:  A full order of eight pieces of stuffed grouper costs HK$298, we asked if we could have a half order and the server politely said yes. When the check came, we found out it cost HK$258! It feels like we've been ripped off.

Lesson learned: never order a dish that's not on the menu without checking the price first.  But then again, if we had found out a half order is just 40 bucks (US$5) less, would we then forgo the dish altogether?  The answer is probably not.
