My Computer Died (2004-11-07)
My computer died two weeks ago. Since it serves my site during the day, KL had to scramble to look for someone whose network could support our site before my computer's back in working order. Fortunately a friend of his was able to help. Tabibito was partially functional at times and that's my least worry. The computer's got to be fixed.
KL first went to solve the problem in the least costly way. He
bought a can of compressed gas which has a long skinny hose that sticks
into every nook and cranny to blow out dust. Of course that
didn't bring the computer back to life. He could now stop blaming
Daifoo for shedding hair inside
the computer which might have caused its death, thank you very much.
Next he bought a new motherboard in Akihabara (
). Because the new motherboard
does not support the old video card, he had to get a new video card as well.
Of course he only realized that after he discoverd the new motherboard
wouldn't even boot with the old video card.
Even after the new video card was installed, my computer still didn't run
reliably. That was when words such
as "S!@#", "Crap" and "Turd" were flying off his mouth. Since you
can't solve a problem by cussing, he had to find another way to fix the
computer.
After about US$150 and many hours of upgrading and downgrading
hardware drivers and tweaking all kinds of parameters, my computer
finally worked! It's not back 100%, but at least we could serve
our site from it again. It still crashes daily but KL is doing everything
he can to cure it, minus the curse words this time.
