People of Hong Kong Part 1 (2004-05-19)

I have noticed some habits unique to Hong Kongers.  One of them is their love of talking on cell phones.  There are people walking and talking on their cell phones everywhere.  People just  seem to have so much to tell their friends on the phones when they are out on the streets, in the stores, inside buses and trains, riding the escalators, in restaurants or even in the restrooms.   And they don't mind a bit sharing their conversation with total strangers around them because if they did they wouldn't be talking so loudly in public.  I also noticed that many Hong Kongers like to hold their cell phones in their hands instead of leaving them in their pockets or bags.  I guess if you have to use it every five seconds, the fastest way to access it is to leave it in your hand, ready to shoot any moment.

Another trend prevelant in Hong Kong is that many people like to wear T-shirts; not that it's a bad thing of course.  And people also like to carry their bags cross the shoulders.  As a result you see T-shirt wearers with a cross-the-shoulder bag everywhere you go.  If only I had a bag with a long strap, I would join in the look any time.

To be continued
