We hopped over to the Italian restaurant next to Bic Camera in Yurakucho which KL's been eyeing for a long time. Lunch course includes Antipasto, Pasta (of choice), Meat and Coffee/tea for 2800Yen (US$27).We both opted for the course except I chose spaghetti while KL
picked risotto. The antipasto consisted of an assortment of
really really itty bitty bite-sized food presented on a very large
plate. In fact all the dishes came on huge platters or
bowls (that seems to be the trend these days I suppose). It
was mediocre hors d'oeuvre, nothing stood out. But the two cubes
of bread a server added to the plate seperately was particularly
foul. Both were stone cold and their texture was completely
off. They tasted like dry crumbly week-old cake. Bread with a cakey
mouthfeel is just wrong.
Only were we half way through the plate did the server bring us the
pasta. We hate it. We hate restaurants that rush us through
and it wasn't even full that day at Scorpione. Nothing we could
do but to let the hot pasta and risotto get cold while we hurried to
finish the antipasto. Fortunately the pasta was excellent and KL
loved his creamy risotto which by the way arrived in bowls that look
like giant upturned sombreros.
The main dish--Chicken--was a disaster from a cook who must've
fallen asleep when he was deep frying it which resulted in a brittlely
dry piece of meat. It was so overly fried that the meat had
turned to a splinter-like cardboard with bitter burnt bits that
required maximum chomping action. The vinegar sauce underneath
the chicken had not the slightest taste of tartness to help cut through
the heaviness of the other deep-fried vegetables on the platter,
instead it tasted SWEET, like sugary sweet. However I did love
the deep fried melt-in-the-mouth eggplant. The only thing I gave
up on was the grilled corn which was tough as wood.
Not a terribly impressive meal.
