How this blog came about (2004-02-25)

I have been searching high and low for a hobby.

I want one that interests me, involves little or no human interaction, does not incur a hefty cost and generates no trash. You know like those stained glass wall hanging things or the decoupage soap people make? They look fun to make and all, but what do I do with them? I can't just drill holes and shove nails in the wall to hang things, we live in a rented apartment.

As for the decoupage soap, after you essentially kill its function as a hygiene item and turn it into a decorative piece, you can't use it. The gauzy piece of pretty printed paper you spend hours covering the bar of soap will peel off in two seconds flat if wet. Fine. So you're supposed to decorate the house with it. But where do you put it? A bunch of soap on the dining table just doesn't do it for me like a bouquet of flowers or a bowl of fruit will.

Then it dawned on me that I could start a web log. Writing can be fun, costs little, and I do it in the privacy of my own home. There are numerous topics I could write about Japan and all the petty observation I make of its culture and custom. My family and friends can get an idea what I'm (not) up to through my journals. Anyone who wants to know what one gaijin(foreigner) thinks about life in Japan--- should go to a bookstore and buy a book on the subject, or they can read my blog.

So that's it. That's the reason this weblog becomes a reality. Because bar soap just becomes way too messy in a soap dish. I prefer liquid soap in a bottle.
