Proper Way To Pray (2004-08-04)
I saw on TV today the proper way to pray in front of the big donation box in a shrine. For those who are interested to know, here's what you do. First you drop money in the box, then you put your hands to your side. Then you bow twice, clap twice, pray and bow again. This sequence completes the rites. I wonder if every local knows the proper way to pray. But if your heart is in it, a little deviation from the ritual is forgivable, isn't it?
Next time you visit a shrine, be sure to observe the Japanese when they pray in front of a donation box. It makes the observation more enjoyable once you understand the custom. It's like watching a movie; it's more fun to watch when you understand the language in the film.
