Ginza Hageten (2010-04-26)

Where did time go?  Said I would check out Ginza (kanji) Hageten in Tokyo and before you know it, a full year has passed before we actually did it!

The branch in Shinjuku (kanji) is closer for us than their head restaurant in Ginza.  Arriving at 1130 am, we were their first customers.  Our smiling waitress was extremely courteous and tried to speak English with us the whole time even though we spoke Japanese to her.

At Hageten, you can order set meals but the chef who does all the frying in his station brings the tempura, one piece at a time, to your table the moment it's finished frying.  In this way, the tempura is guaranteed fresh, piping hot and very crispy.

You can also get the same service in fancy tempura restaurants where you sit at the counter and the chef places the tempura right in front of you as soon as it leaves the big frying cauldron, but then they often charge you a hundred bucks or more for a course meal.  To be frank, Hageten will totally suffice for us.
