Olympics Afterthought (2004-08-31)
Well, the Olympics has concluded and basically I didn't see top athletes perform in many of their respective sports. But what can you do? One can't expect Japan to participate in every single event; those that didn't have Japanese athletes in them were pretty much not of interest to the TV executives here. Besides there are just waaaaay too many sports in the Olympics, even if the lot was broadcast, I still couldn't stay awake for such exciting events like Marathon and Shooting.Equestrian is a peculiar sport.
All those meticulously groomed horses and horse people don't horse
around (Sorry, can't help it). They prance and leap
beautifully. That's not to say they are the only animals that can
jump. The Olympic people really shouldn't allow one species of
animal in the
Games and leave out the others, that will hurt the feelings of millions
of excellent frisbee-catching dogs out there.
Speaking of grooming, rhythmic gymnasts paid the most attention to
their appearances. Skill alone must not be the single determining
factor in winning, looks like those skinny girls tried to impress the
heck out of judges by wearing HEAVY makeup and MANY glittering
outfits. I hope they also got awarded big points for matching
each of their apparatus to the colors of the individual costume.
That is an achievement all other olympians should take note of,
including athletes in the
Shooting event.
The pose male wrestlers make at the resumption of a bout is most
unusual. What with one man on all fours while the other man wraps
his arms around the waist of the first guy and his body on top of his
opponent's, it is almost
erotic. "Not that there is
anything wrong with that."
Who would have thought Keirin is a sport? It sounds like
something you get drunk on.
I feel a little sad watching the Olympic Games finish and I look
forward to the next one. Nothing like seeing
Judo broadcast sixteen days straight on the television screen, replay
after replay. Together with Marathon and Pistol Shooting... ooh,
my legs feel wobbly.
