More Friends Visited Us (2005-01-07)

KL's friend, Rick, from his highschool years visited us recently.  He and his new wife had been away from their hometown of California for a few weeks visiting families and friends in Hong Kong and made a detour to see us here in Tokyo before returning to the US.  The last time we saw him was 11 years ago in Sydney when he was traveling on a business trip.  Rick is a very fun guy with a hearty laugh, is open with his feelings (which I like a lot) and likes to pay for meals, who could resist a friend like that?

We were together for a day and a half over the weekend and went to typical touristy places like Shibuya (kanji) and Roppongi Hills (kanji).  KL also took them to Kichijoji (kanji) where Rick's wife, as a tourist, shopped for a most unusual thing: a pair of prescription glasses.  I'm glad she did because it gave her a chance to experience the hospitable service provided by Japanese staff.  The glasses were also finished in just 25 minutes from eye examination to the final fitting, impressive speed!

For our last dinner together we went to the izakaya we like very much in Kichijoji.  We ate yakitori (grilled chicken) in our own private room and had a good time reminiscing.  After that Rick suggested we buy dessert from a cake shop and eat it in his hotel.  We liked that idea so we got cakes and an apple pie for me from Takano, a cake shop.   We brought the sweets back to their hotel and savored a round of dessert while enjoying the view from the window of their 22nd-story room.

It is so nice old friends whose company you enjoy pay you a visit.  Chatting about the past is actually more fun than talking about the future.  May be I am getting old.
