People Get Excited When A New Department Store Opens (2007-11-02)
This post should've been up last month when Marui Department Store opened in Yurakucho on Oct 12. But my Sydney travelogue was still running back then, so this not-so-current news gets pushed back here.
As always with the opening of a new mall or a new big store, this
one also attracted many shoppers who'd been lining
up way before the opening time of 10am. News crew from several TV
stations were present to film the pandemonium the eager crowd was
foreseen to create when they rush into the store and snap up bargain
bags.
The opening of Marui is news worthy to the local people. But seriously, another department store in Tokyo? What's new?
Update: I got my information wrong. It wasn't just Marui that opened, it was the whole frigging mall! The mall is called Itocia with Marui being the biggest tenant. There are a bunch of other small shops, boutiques and shoe stores etc in Itocia including restaurants and food shops. That explains the media attention on its opening date.
