Japanese Pubs (2004-08-01)

Japanese pubs are called izakaya, they are popular places for salarymen to have a drink and some grilled chicken after work.  The dishes served in izakaya are usually small.  People would order several different dishes and beer, finish those, and keep ordering more.

We've been to a few izakaya.  They are my favorite Japanese style restaurants.  The one we recently went to in Kichijoji (kanji) has a long name and the food was delicious.  Before we stepped past the cashier, we had to take our shoes off in the entrance (always wear clean socks with no holes in Japan, you don't know when you might need to expose them).  A staff handed us a number plate with which to claim our shoes upon leaving the restaurant before another employee showed us our table.  Most tables are enclosed in partition that stretches from floor to ceiling, some even have doors.  They are quite secluded and are ideal for those who desire privacy when they eat.  The tables sit in a hole on the floor where you can extend your legs.  So although you are sitting on the floor, your legs won't feel uncomfortable or give you pins and needles.  There is a bell on each table for diners to call the waiters.  I was having fun even before we started the meal.  The food was yummy but we ordered too much chicken and meat and got ourselves too stuffed for anything else.  We would need to go back another time to try other dishes on the menu.

Today's pictures are all about that pub and the food we ate there.  You might have Japanese restaurants in your city, but they will never be as good as this one.
