Melon Bread (2004-08-23)

Melon bread is a unique Japanese bread enjoyed by many local people.  Almost every bakery makes it.  It is a dome-shaped bread with a thin crust on top which has been scored in a diamond pattern, thus resembling the skin of a rock melon (or does it?).  A traditional good melon bread is fluffy and soft with a crunchy topping.  Some bakeries make a fancier version of this sweet edible dome by using real melon juice in the dough or filling the bread with cream.

To me, melon bread neither looks nor tastes like melon.  Were I to name this bread, I would call it Turtle Shell Roll.
