Second Half Of Our Malaysian Trip (2004-10-28)
After Langkawi, we boarded a plane to Kuala Lumpur. Our travel agency provided a half-day tour of the city for us. Our local tour guide is Chinese and we were able to speak in Cantonese with him the whole time. I was more interested in hearing all those inside stories about Malaysia than seeing the museum and mosque we visited. He told us the heavy favoritism Malaysian government shows toward Malays (60% of the population), the absence of freedom of speech, the corruption in all levels of the society (you can buy your way out of a murder trial if you have enough money) and other things tourists won't normally hear about. It was quite an eye-opener.The most enjoyable thing for me in KL is food. Every meal we
had was delicious. I had the best grilled stingray at the hawker
center near our hotel. It is right next to Lot 10 in Bukit
Bintang and I would recommend others to eat at that seafood stall.
Transportation in Kuala Lumpur is efficient and easy to use.
Our tour guide gave us two monorail passes worth 10 Ringgit each which
enabled us to go to many places and visit markets and malls.
Taxis are plentiful and very cheap but most of them are pretty old and
ratty, just like the condition of many roads and streets.
Overall speaking, Kuala Lumpur is a great city for shopaholics and
diners. It is best to go there as a stopover or one of the
destination in a tour comprised of several cities. May be some
day we can do a trip of Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Maldives. It
would be nice.
