Outback Grill (2004-12-15)
We both love barbecued food, we used to cook on the Weber a lot when we were in Sydney. KL saw the advertising poster for Outback Grill in Shibuya (
Apart from its name, the restaurant does have an Australian theme
throughout its decor. The walls are decorated with Aboriginal dot
paintings, boomerangs and didgeridoos. The signs on the restrooms
are marked Sheilas and Blokes. And the menu serves dishes such as
Queensland Salad and Alice Springs Chicken. The only thing
missing is for the staff to greet us "G'day!".
Since we went there to eat ribs, we did not even consider other
choices of main courses which the restaurant is famous for, namely
steaks. We also received a complimentary side order of fried
onion rings as the restaurant was still promoting its recent opening in
the area.
The ribs were the best I had since coming to Tokyo. The meat
was tender enough to just fall off the bones without being mushy.
The ribs had a strong smoky flavor as if they had been grilled over
charcoal for a long time and the sauce covering them was a very
flavorful mixture of tanginess and spiciness (but not hot). And
the servings were huge! We could only eat a third of the onion
rings and neither of us could finish our plates. While we were
stuffing ourselves, the manager came to our table to introduce himself
and asked us how the food was, a very American approach which is not
seen in all the restaurants in Japan we have been to. To my
surprise, he suggested a doggy bag for the unfinished food. That
is also a first for us here.
We like Outback Grill a lot and intend to go back many more
times. Not only is the food really tasty, the whole dining
experience is nostalgic and pleasant.
