Slimy Japanese Yam (2005-02-04)

Slimy food is one of the numerous food I don't like.  If you go to restaurants here that specialize in grilled beef tongue, a set meal will almost always come with a bowl of grated Japanese yam which looks like white spit.  You are supposed to eat this viscous tasteless goo with rice.  I took a small bite of it five years ago and I couldn't stop thinking I was eating thick phlegm.  Needless to say, one bite is all it took for me to stay away from this unique vegetable forever.

Locals like Japanese yam.  They use it in all kinds of cooking, but mainly they eat this stuff raw and grated.  And since these yams are so incredibly sticky, they don't produce any pulp when grated, they turn into a glob of thick muck.  KL is pretty open-minded and all-accepting when it comes to food, he eats just about anything but even he has to give Japanese yam a miss.
