Shimokitazawa (2004-05-04)

The Sunday before last we went to Shimokitazawa (kanji), a place frequented by teens and people in their twenties who browse the many boutiques there.  It is only eight minutes from Shinjuku (kanji) on the Odakyu Line (kanji) express train.  We used to live in a suburb on that train line and therefore visited the place occasionally back then.  We just wanted to go back and see what has changed.

As soon as we came out of the station, we were surrounded by young people, many of whom looked like highschool kids.  We found a supermarket right outside the north exit which wasn't there three years ago.  A well-known electronics store in Akihabara (kanji) has opened a branch there.  We also saw quite a few new shops and restaurants.  Just walking the streets there brought back a lot of memories of the first two years of our lives in Japan.  I can't imagine one day visiting Tokyo after we move back to Sydney, what a mind-blowing explosion of flashing memories we will be having.

We left Shimokitazawa in late afternoon and went to Kichijoji (kanji) to get the yummy bread from Le repas and cakes and apple pie from Takano before heading home.  It was a good day out but I do feel old walking down the memory lane in Shimokitazawa and walking past all those young people there.
