Tokyo Midtown (2008-05-29)
What Tokyo Midtown essentially is: A Very Swanky Mall. What with the wooden paneling interior, down lights, water architecture and sculptures, you have one ostentatious shopping complex. Sure, you have also a Ritz-Carlton in the complex, a super expensive-looking apartment building and immaculate garden surrounding the area, but the focal point of the US$3 billion project is still the Galleria (main shopping part of the establishment). The majority of the shops in Tokyo Midtown look expensive.
Jean-Paul Hevin chocolate shop has a gloved and fully dressed staff
opening the door for customers, an ultra pricey fruit/cake shop can be
found on the ground floor (where we saw a locally-grown mango selling
for US$200!!!!), Harry Winston sets up shop there, and a whole bunch of
other high-class shops and restaurants compete for business.
If you are traveling in Tokyo and have extra time left after
visiting the "must-go" tourist spots, Tokyo Midtown could be an
interesting place to drop by and see how the Japanese showcase their
decadence and richness.
