Silent Cell Phones (2004-07-01)

I have a friend whose husband works in a movie theater in Shinjuku (kanji).  The company used to give out tons of movie passes to its employees until six months ago.  But for over three years I'd been watching free movies thanks to all those passes I got from my friend.  If you know how expensive it is to go to the movies here, you'll understand what an excellent profit I had raked.

Anyway what I'm saying is I've been to many movies in the past years, at least twice a month.  During those times never did I hear a cell phone ring once during a movie.  I'd never seen anyone rush out the theater or whisper into a phone while a movie was running either.  So I believe people dutifully follow the advice from the theater and turn off their phones instead of switching them to the vibration mode.  Pretty impressive good manners observed by movie goers here.

By the way, it costs 1800 Yen for a movie ticket, that is about US$17.50.
