Spring is almost here (2004-03-01)

Today the temperature dropped 12 degrees; from a balmy 17C yesterday to a freezing 5C at noon. Despite the drop in temperature, I know spring is almost here because plum blossoms are in full bloom everywhere. I also saw the first snail of this year. I found the tiny bug clinging to the glass wall that encases our balcony a couple of days ago.

A suburb close to where I live is called Umesato (Plum Village) and you can pretty much guess where it gets its name. The area is stippled with pink and white plum trees. Those that are studded with hot pink flowers showcase a breathtaking canvas in fuschia. Plum trees are in deed a herald of spring. In about six weeks when spring is here to stay, it will be cherry trees's turn to display their spectacular blossoms. The Japanese will be flocking to view them and so will we.
