Efoo's First Encounter With Crabs (2010-02-17)

Late last year, Efoo met his first mud crab from Ueno (kanji).  It wasn't a live one and he showed little interest in that.  Recently, we ordered a kg of live blue swimmers from southern Japan and Efoo was mesmerized by those wriggly crustacean.

The box of crabs arrived after traveling by air in a sealed styrofoam box.  When I opened it, I was disappointed to find them motionless.  They dead?!  Their bodies also felt very cold sitting on a bed of ice cubes.  I moved the crabs to a bowl and put them on the computer where it's warm and what do you know, three came alive!  So, they were just suffering from a bad case of hypothermia and not dead.  Unfortunately two remained still and never regained consciousness.

There's a reason KL insisted we pay more to get live crabs than to buy those dead or frozen ones from the supermarkets.  These blue swimmers were so very good.  Their meat was firm, sweet, juicy and full of roe. Recipes for the two dishes I made from them to follow tomorrow.
