Fukusen Unagi-don, Yakitori-don (2010-06-05)

Deep inside Tsukiji (kanji) fish market are quite a few sushi shops.  Some are so popular that you need to queue for over an hour for a seat.  Wedged between some sushi-ya is Fukusen, a little place that serves chargrilled unagi (eel) and yakitori (chicken).  One can order them as snacks or as a set meal like we did.

KL really enjoyed his "half-and half" set of unagi-don (eel over rice) and chatsuke (eel over rice with green tea broth).  I don't eat eels, so I got the yakitori-don which was very yummy.  The chicken had a strong chargrilled flavor and very juicy, which went perfectly well with the sweet/savory sauce on the rice.  It was JUST cooked to perfection, 20 seconds less over the coal, it'd have been under-cooked.

Next time you are in Tsukiji and get tired of queuing for sushi, why not make a change and enjoy some chargrilled eel or chicken?  (Go visit Tsukiji Fish Market before it moves to Toyosu in 2012!)

Fukusen    Open from 6am to 1pm.  Half-and-half sets available after 730am, set meals are charged as single rice bowl between 11am and 1pm.  (Click the above photo to see where the shop is, otherwise the address is Building #5, inside Tsikiji Fish Market)
