Hermit Crabs (2004-09-07)
I saw on TV that hermit crabs (Yadokari) are gaining popularity as pets in Tokyo. Crab owners like to paint the shells in various colors and patterns. (Why am I not surprised that Japanese will do something like that to their pet crabs?)
I went shopping in a suburb near ours and saw the real things being
sold in a garden shop. To my disappointment, those crabs were
living in boring drab shells. I guess if I want to see a hermit
crab in a polka dots or rainbow digs, I'll have to visit someone who
owns one. What is my chance of meeting an avant-gardist Japanese
who is also a hermit-crab lover? Zilch. I spend too much
time indoors, like a hermit crab.
