Japanese produce (2004-03-13)

I have lived in four countries and traveled to many more. Without a doubt, I can tell you that Japanese-grown produce is the best we've eaten. Not only do you not see rotted fruit and vegetables on supermarket shelves, their quality is superb. And most of the vegies are packed in neat little plastic bags stacked orderly and cleanly. You rarely see say, a mountain of onions dumped helter-skelter style on a great big table and shoppers just dig into the pile to help themselves while making the process very chaotic and messy.

An interesting phenomenon in many supermarkets is this: the staff constantly walk the aisles to make sure there is no empty space on the shelves. For example, if I go get a bottle of oil off the shelf, that will leave a space where the bottle sat before. A staff will zip by in no time to push the rest of the bottles on that vertical row one notch up front, thus filling the space occupied by my bottle. I don't know the reason behind this baffling act, it's like they are obsessed with filling holes and gaps on the shelves. May be some shoppers are like,"Yay, I'm the first one to get that oil!"
