Enoshima Island (2005-06-06)

Enoshima (kanji) is a very small island on the southwest of Tokyo.  On one side of the island is a beach popular with surfers while a long stretch of crag and jutting rocky platforms border the other side.  There are also well-paved trails that lead to several shrines and a lighthouse on the hill.

KL and I paid a visit to the island on a recent weekend.  We boarded the express train on the Odakyu Line (kanji) at Shinjuku (kanji) to Fujisawa (kanji) station and switched to a local train from there to get to Katase-Enoshima (kanji) station, the terminal.  Because the express train only made stops at a handful of stations and skipped over thirty of them along the way, we were able to reach our destination in just 63 minutes.

Despite the overcast weather, there were still quite a number of visitors that day.  As soon as we left the station, we crossed the Bentenbashi Bridge to the main part of the island.  We had lunch at a Japanese style seafood restaurant before we hiked our way up the hill.

After several hours visiting shrines and looking at the sea, we made our way back to the bridge and took a brief walk along the sandy beach before we called it a day.  It was a great little trip but I was tired from all the walking and was eager to go home.

To be continued
