Bird Feeder (2004-04-11)
My American parents with whom I stayed as an exchange student have a birdbath in their backyard. I used to watch birds dip and swish in the water and feed on the food my American dad put out when I visited them a few years ago. It is one of my favorite pastime. Although I can't put a birdbath in our balcony, may be I'll have a shot attracting birds to it by putting out a bird feeder. KL says it'll probably never work but what's the harm in trying?I heard that there is a large pet and garden shop in Futakotamagawa,
so we went there yesterday in search of a bird feeder. We first
went to lunch in a restaurant in Mark City, a fairly new hotel
and shopping complex in Shibuya (), since we had to catch our connecting
train there anyway. After our meal we took the short ride on the
subway Denentoshi line train to our destination.
The pet and garden shop is part of the large Takashimaya () Department
Store in Futakotamagawa. They are housed in a separate building
about a 10-minute walk from the department store. There is a free
shuttle bus for people who don't feel like walking the short
distance. We opted to walk and absorb the scenery on the way
there.
The pet shop is much smaller than I had expected and they don't carry bird supplies. I was so disappointed even though it wasn't the first time I looked and found nothing. Fortunately we got to see numerous people walking their dogs or having lunch with their pooches at the many cafes in the area or the day would've been completely wasted. We went back to Takashimaya empty-handed. KL had a gelato at the food section and I bought cakes and some other grocery before we headed home.
By now I am pretty convinced that I won't find any bird feeders in
Toyko so I've made one today using a pet bottle and a couple of plastic
trays. KL likes it because it doesn't cost anything. Hope I
can write about birds in our balcony one day. Do I need to cross
my toes too?
