Bistrot Le Fauchon (2007-02-17)

If you live in Hong Kong, HK$148/US$18 for a 3-course French dinner may not be the best deal in town.  Afterall, there are tons of good eats costing less around town; but for us Tokyoites, the quality and quantity Bistrot Le Fauchon gives you for this amount of money is beyond belief.  Eighteen bucks couldn't even buy you a decent entree (main) in Tokyo, much less the big hunk of beef tenderloin we had.

It was a fluke we picked that restaurant after trying two other Chinese restaurants with no tables available.  It's near impossible to get a table at prime dinner time in popular Chinese restaurants on the weekend without reservation.  KL's brother Marco tossed a coin and French food in Harbour City (close to our hotel) won out which was destined to be our Saturday farewell dinner together.

The restaurant was only half full when we got there around 8:30pm.  The sofa seats looked comfy, but we got a secluded booth with equally soft seats and back which was even better.  The service was friendly and fast.  The manager took our order and the waiter who brought us the soup kept saying thank you to each of us as he put the soup down.

The 3-course dinner consists of an appetizer, soup, entree and coffee.  The dish for each course is to be chosen from their regular menu by the diner.  Everything looked delicious and I'd love to try them all.  I decided to have the baby pigeon confit salad as I love duck confit, I figured pigeon couldn't be too far off.  For soup, all three of us chose bouillabaisse and all three of us chose beef tenderloin with tiger prawn for entree.  We must have the same good taste!

The manager asked us how we liked our beef and we all said 70%.  We even like the same bloodiness in our steak!  In Hong Kong people don't say well done or medium or rare when asked how they like their steak, they use a percentage to indicate doneness.  Medium well would be 80% and medium is 50% and so forth.

All my dishes were really yummy.  The pigeon confit was tender and flavorful paired nicely with the berry dressing.  The soup was also good presented in a stylish uneven bowl.  The beef tenderloin lived up to its name by being VERY TENDER although I think it was cooked less than 70% as it was oozing sanguine goodness when my knife glided through the buttery soft meat.  But it didn't bother me a bit.  The serving was huge even though it didn't look that way on a gigantic plate.  We were really full by the time we finished our meal.

It was a perfect cap to our fooding in Hong Kong.
