Crystal (2007-05-30)
There was a period when I was hooked to TV shopping in Sydney. I watched the channel everyday and made excuses to buy appliances I didn't need or cubic zirconia jewelry I definitely didn't want except on the day it was aired. I guess you can call that the dark period of my life.I remember seeing the host on the shopping channel selling crystal
ornaments and I would be mesmerized by the sparkle and light darted
from the shining facets under cleverly placed studio lights. I of
course couldn't resist it and ordered myself two hanging pieces, a
sphere and a diamond-shaped one.
I brought them with me to Tokyo and broke them in the first
apartment we lived in. I hung them together in the balcony and a
gust of strong wind one day caused them to bang at each other and left
the sphere one with a heavy dent and the angular one a small
chip. It was a painful shame to see perfect crystals ruined but
lessons are often learned from stupidity. I have since hung them
on curtain rods away from the wind but still able to receive the
sunlight.
The spectrum of rainbow shades thrown by the crystal on the wall is
quite hypnotizing. When the glass door behind the crystal is
slightly ajar to let in the breeze, the crystal swings which causes the
rainbow of colors on the wall to swing with it which in turn causes MY
head to swing following the colors.
