Expensive Mushroom (2004-10-09)
Mushrooms are abundant this time of the year. I love them, they are favorable and not very pricey, except when they are the Japanese matsutake mushrooms naturally found in forests. Locally-picked ones are several times more expensive than imported ones from Korea and China.
I saw some recently that sold for 45000yen (about US$440) for a mere four or five stalks! Who can afford them? Who will fork over that much money on fungi? Certainly not me. I am not that insane.
