Popular Activities In Enoshima (2005-06-09)

Of the many activities one can do in Enoshima (kanji), surfing would have to be the most popular sports.  In summer a great number of sun lovers crowd the beach to sunbake and surfers show off their skills in the water.  Other water sports such as windsurfing and jet skiing are also popular there.  Enoshima is also favored by anglers, especially on the rocky side of the island.

There was neither wind nor surfs on the day we went to Enoshima, so there were just a few windsurfers in the water trying desperately to hold the sails upright despite of the windless sea.  The water was too calm for surfing and surfers were nowhere to be seen.  It was also a cool day and the beach was devoid of sun bathers or swimmers.

Unlike tropical beaches which conjure up an image of sun bathing in a lazy afternoon followed by a dip in clear blue water, Enoshima's beaches do not look very appealing.  Their sand is a dirty gray color and the water look dark and muddy from a distance.  The volcanoes and hotsprings in Japan might have something to do with the charcoal-color sand and sea, fortunately Enoshima doesn't smell sulfurous.
