Iron Eggs (2005-06-23)
My friend's friend just returned from a trip to Taipei and brought me a mini pack of "iron eggs" that we so wanted to try in Taiwan but didn't. We didn't see these single serves packs in Dansui or we would have bought a pack. Now that I got one, KL and I could finally try these mysterious black eggs. The first impression that sprang to mind when I popped one in the
mouth was that "I must be chewing on a rubber boot!". The "white"
was extremely leathery but the yolk was unexpectedly soft. As for
the taste? It's good! It had a strong taste of the spices
used in a traditional Chinese style stew. The fragrance from star
anise, cinnamon, ginger and soy sauce was unmistakable.
If I ever go back to Taipei, I would use the money spent on a bag of iron eggs to buy a tin of Taiwanese pork jerky flakes instead. They taste alike, but pork jerky is never tough like rubber.
