Japanese Musk Melon (2006-08-31)
Japanese musk melons have green flesh like the rock melons you find in western countries. They have distinctive veins on the skin and a straight stem on top. A musk melon can set you back US$15 to $500 each. Usually the more pronounced and uniformed the veins and stem are, the more expensive a melon costs.I don't care how sweet and super a melon is said to be, there is no
justification for paying 500 bucks for one. No pieces of fruit
are worth that kind of money. The other day we paid about $16 for
a musk melon which was on sale at a specialty fruit shop, and that's
the most I had ever paid for one. I was curious to see if these
melons are as good as the growers have proclaimed.
The flesh was sweet, no doubt about that. But is it worth
paying twice as much as I would for ordinary rock melons without the
prominent veins and stem in my local supermarket? I am not so
sure.
