Shingen Mochi (2007-01-21)
Mrs Y got a box of Shingen mochi (chewy rice balls) and shared it with me. Shingen mochi was first made by Kikyouya over 44 years ago for which it has received some prestigious awards in various contests. You can buy this mochi in some department stores and Narita Airport.Shingen mochi is always presented in cutesy little individual
parcels in which the
mochi is buried under a thick layer of soybean flour (kinako) and a
tiny bottle of dark syrup (kuromitsu). The rice ball is pretty
bland by itself, thus it needs the kinako and kuromitsu for
flavoring.
I like Shingen mochi as it is, but I like it more when smeared with peanut butter instead of the soybean flour and syrup. It's "East Meets West" Tabibito way.
