A Failed Attempt At Dehydrating Vegetables (2008-09-19)
I've always wanted a food dehydrator, but KL FORBIDS it, so I bought a mesh net thingie in 2003 for a buck at a 100-Yen shop hoping to dry veggies in it. But you know how it is when procrastination creeps in and before you know it, five years have past! Last month I determined to put my net to good use. Then I googled sun drying vegies and was hit with the reality that
my experiment is likely to fail because of Tokyo's humidity.
*SIGH* Undeterred, I sliced pumpkins, carrots, garlic, and
tomatoes to get my project going. I later added shiitake
mushrooms cause I found some on sale for a dollar a pack at the
supermarket.
The result was as expected: EPIC FAIL.
One full week and the vegies never became crisp. Everything
went to the bin except the mushrooms which I rehydrated and used in a
soup. Although they emitted no particular fragrance during and
after drying, they were super aromatic during cooking. When they
were simmering in the soup, the entire apartment smelled like
commercial dried shiitake mushrooms, it was amazing.
PALEEEEEEASE KL, I WANT A FOOD DEHYDRATOR!!!!
